Wartime Houses, Grown-Up Trees

Tree Service in Dixie Inn has a lot to do with when the village was built. Most of Dixie Inn's original houses went up during World War II for workers at the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant, off US 80 to the east. The village was incorporated in 1956, when Clyde A. Stanley became the first mayor, winning by a vote of 69 to 54. It is still tiny, 293 residents in 2020 on about half a square mile of land, just off I-20 on the old Shreveport Road, about 26 miles east of Shreveport and 3 miles west of Minden.

Eighty years of growth

Trees planted beside those wartime homes, or that sprouted on their own soon after, have now had roughly eighty years to grow. On small lots, that means big crowns over small roofs, roots under driveways and walks, and limbs that reach the neighbor's house. Many of these trees have also been topped or badly pruned at some point, which leaves weak sprouts and hidden decay at old cuts.

Working on small lots

There is rarely room to drop a large tree in one piece on a Dixie Inn lot. Most removals here are done in sections:

  • A climber or lift works from the top down.
  • Each piece is tied off and lowered by rope, away from roofs, fences and lines.
  • The trunk is cut in short lengths and carried or rolled to the street.
  • The stump is ground below grade so the spot can be planted or paved.

For pruning, we focus on clearing roofs, reducing weight on long limbs and removing dead wood, without topping.

Roots, foundations and pipes

On older houses, roots and foundations often share very little space. Tree roots rarely break a sound foundation on their own, but they can lift sidewalks and driveways, and they will move into pipes that are already cracked. If you are seeing damage, it is worth weighing the value of the tree against the cost of repairs, and we can help you think that through.

Replacing old trees

When an old tree has to go, replacing it with a smaller species planted farther from the house can give you shade without repeating the same problems. Ask us for ideas when we visit.

Neighbors on every side

On lots this close together, a tree in one yard usually hangs over another. Before we start, it helps to let the neighbors know, especially if limbs will be lowered over their fence or wood carried through a shared drive. We can talk with them about access if you would like, and we always leave both yards clean. If a tree straddles the property line, both owners should agree on the plan before any cutting starts.

Dixie Inn Questions

Can you remove a big tree in a small backyard with no room to drop it?

Yes. We take it down in sections, lowering each piece by rope, and carry the wood out to the street.

My tree was topped years ago. Is it safe?

Topped trees often have decay where the old cuts were and weakly attached sprouts. We can look at the old cuts and tell you whether the tree can be restored with pruning or should come down.

Are tree roots damaging my foundation?

Roots rarely break a sound foundation by themselves, but they can lift walks and enter cracked pipes. We can help you decide whether the tree is worth keeping.

Do you come to Dixie Inn for one tree?

Yes. We serve Dixie Inn and the Minden area, and we can often schedule it alongside nearby work.

What should I replace an old tree with on a small lot?

A smaller species, such as a redbud, dogwood or crape myrtle, planted well away from the house and the service line usually fits a small lot better than another large shade tree. We can suggest spots during the visit.
