Pruning That Helps a Tree Ride Out the Next Storm
Tree trimming and pruning is how most big trees around Shreveport get to stay. A water oak with one heavy limb over the bedroom, a pecan with a tight V-shaped fork, or a pine dropping dead branches on the carport can often be made much safer with the right cuts instead of a removal. Good pruning takes out dead and weak wood, reduces the weight on long limbs, and opens the crown so wind passes through it rather than pushing against a solid sail of leaves. Bad pruning, especially topping, does the opposite: it leaves big wounds that rot and sends up a mass of weakly attached sprouts that break in the next storm.
How we prune
We follow the ANSI A300 pruning standard, which is the industry's reference for how and where to cut. In practice that means cutting just outside the branch collar instead of flush with the trunk, taking long limbs back to a lateral branch instead of stubbing them, and not removing more of the live crown than the tree can afford in one visit. Climbing spikes are not used on trees that are being kept, because each spike wound is an opening for decay. Most shade-tree work is a mix of four cuts: cleaning out dead wood, thinning, raising the lower crown, and reducing limbs that are too long or too close to the house.
The Shreveport trees we prune most
Water oaks and willow oaks get the most attention, because they grow fast, carry long heavy limbs and are among the less wind-firm trees in Louisiana according to LSU AgCenter. Pecans tend to form included bark in tight forks and drop limbs in summer storms, so we look closely at their unions. Live oaks, which hold up well in wind, mostly need their long lateral limbs reduced and lifted off roofs and drives. Pines need little shaping, but dead lower limbs and broken tops are worth removing before they fall.
Crape myrtles
Crape myrtles are everywhere in Shreveport, and they are among the most badly pruned trees in the South. Cutting every trunk back to the same height each winter, often called crape murder, leaves knobby stubs and weak shoots. Extension horticulturists in Texas and Arkansas recommend keeping three to seven well-spaced trunks, removing suckers and crossing branches, and taking off seed heads lightly if you like, rather than topping. If a crape myrtle is simply too big for its spot, it may be better to replace it with a smaller variety than to cut it back hard every year.
Timing
Late fall through winter is a good window for most shade trees here: the leaves are off, the branch structure is easy to see, and the work is done before spring thunderstorm season. Spring-flowering trees are best pruned right after they bloom. Dead, cracked or hanging limbs over a roof or a play area are handled whenever they show up.
Common Jobs
Each pruning job is written up as a list of specific cuts and goals, not just a trim.
Deadwood removal
Dead, broken and hanging limbs taken out of the crown before they fall.
Crown thinning
Selected interior branches removed so wind moves through the tree and limbs carry less weight.
Roof, driveway and line clearance
Limbs reduced or raised off the house, carport, drive and the service drop to the house.
Structural pruning of young trees
Early cuts on young oaks and pecans to set one strong leader and well-spaced limbs.
Crape myrtle pruning
Suckers, crossing branches and seed heads removed without topping the trunks.

How It Works
1. Look at the whole crown
We note dead wood, weak forks, long heavy limbs and anything touching the roof or wires.
2. Agree on the cuts
Your quote lists what comes off each tree and why, so you know what the tree will look like after.
3. Prune
Climbers make the cuts to A300 practice, lowering limbs where they would damage something below.
4. Haul-off and cleanup
Brush chipped or hauled, small wood stacked or removed, and the yard raked.

Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
How much does tree trimming cost in Shreveport?
HomeGuide's national figures put trimming a tree up to 30 feet at $250 to $700, 30 to 60 feet at $600 to $1,200, and taller trees $1,000 or more. Crape myrtles run much less. We price each tree on a written quote after seeing it.
Should I top my tree to make it safer?
No. Topping removes the parts of the tree that make its food, leaves large wounds that decay, and triggers dense sprouts that are weakly attached and break easily. Reducing long limbs back to a side branch and thinning the crown makes a tree safer without those problems.
How often should big oaks and pecans be pruned?
For mature shade trees, every three to five years is common, with dead or cracked limbs removed whenever they appear. Young trees benefit from lighter structural pruning more often in their first years.
Can you trim branches near the power line to my house?
The line running from the pole to your house is the property owner's to keep clear, and SWEPCO will send a crew to disconnect it temporarily if you call at least two working days before the work. We schedule around that disconnect. The primary, secondary and neutral wires on the poles are SWEPCO's responsibility, and its crews trim there, usually taking about three years of growth back to a natural branch point. Cable and phone lines, the lowest wires on a pole, are not maintained by SWEPCO.
Can I trim my neighbor's branches that hang over my yard?
In general you can cut back overhanging branches on your side as long as you do not harm the tree, but it is wise to talk with your neighbor first. Heavy cuts on one side can unbalance a tree, so we look at the whole tree before cutting.
