Opening Up Overgrown Ground Around Shreveport
Land and lot clearing comes up whenever someone buys a piece of ground on the edge of town and finds it grown over. Around Shreveport that is usually a mix of young pines, sweetgums, hackberries, privet, briars and Chinese tallow that has filled in an old field or a back corner of a large lot. It can be a home site out toward Blanchard, a few acres near Keithville, a fence line on the Bossier side that has disappeared into brush, or a lakefront lot that needs a view opened up. Clearing turns that into usable ground without stripping it bare.
Deciding what stays
The first step is walking the property and marking the trees worth keeping. A big healthy oak, a few well-spaced pines or a line of trees along a property edge can add shade and value to a new house. Thickets of small, crowded trees and invasive species usually go. Chinese tallow, which spreads quickly through fields and wet areas in Louisiana, is low on LSU AgCenter's wind-resistance list and is rarely worth saving. LSU AgCenter also notes that trees growing in groups protect each other from wind, so suddenly leaving one tall pine alone after clearing everything around it can make it more likely to fail. We plan the cut with that in mind.
Methods
Small lots and fence lines are often cleared with saws and a chipper, which leaves the ground in good shape. Larger areas may call for forestry mulching, where a machine grinds standing brush and small trees into a mulch layer on the ground, or for cutting and hauling. Stumps can be ground if the area will be mowed or built on. Wet ground matters here: after heavy rain, low ground near bayous and the Red River stays soft, and heavy machines leave ruts, so we may schedule the work for a dry stretch.
Before you clear
Check the paperwork first. Subdivision covenants, lender or builder requirements, and city or parish rules for new construction can all affect what may be cleared. Wetland areas may carry federal limits on clearing and filling. Call Louisiana 811 before any digging or stump grinding so buried lines are marked. If power lines cross the property, SWEPCO handles trees near them.
What is left at the end
We agree in writing what the site should look like when we leave: cleared to the ground or mulched, stumps ground or left, brush chipped and spread or hauled away, and which trees stay. That keeps the bill and the result predictable.
What We Handle
Clearing is scoped by area and by what you want left standing.
Brush and undergrowth clearing
Briars, privet, vines and saplings cut and chipped or mulched.
Selective tree clearing
Crowded and invasive trees removed while marked keeper trees stay.
Fence line clearing
Trees and brush cut back along property lines so a fence can be built or repaired.
Forestry mulching
Standing brush and small trees ground in place into a mulch layer on larger areas.
Home site preparation
Building pads and driveways cleared, with stumps ground where needed.

How It Works
1. Walk the property
We mark the trees to keep, note wet ground, slopes, wires and access, and ask about your plans.
2. Scope it in writing
The area, method, stump work and debris handling are spelled out with the price.
3. Clear
Brush and trees cut, chipped or mulched, working around the trees that stay.
4. Finish the ground
Stumps ground as agreed, debris spread or hauled, and the site left as described.

Land & Lot Clearing Questions
How much does it cost to clear a lot near Shreveport?
HomeGuide's national figures put light clearing around $1,200 to $2,500 per acre and heavily wooded land $4,500 to $8,000 per acre, with a quarter-acre lot often $800 to $3,000. Dense pines, big stumps and hauling everything off raise the price. We quote after walking the property.
Can you clear the brush but keep the big trees?
Yes, and that is usually the better result. We mark the keeper trees with you first and work around them, keeping machines off their root zones as much as possible.
What is forestry mulching?
A machine with a rotating cutting head grinds standing brush and small trees into chips and leaves them on the ground as mulch. It is quicker than cutting and hauling on larger areas and helps hold soil, but it leaves a mulch layer rather than bare dirt.
Do I need permission to clear land?
On private land, clearing brush and trees is generally allowed, but subdivision covenants, building plans and wetland rules can limit it. If the property has low, wet ground, check before clearing or filling it.
What happens to all the brush?
It can be chipped and spread on site, mulched in place, or hauled away. Hauling everything off costs more, so we list each option on the quote.
