Tree Work at the Water's Edge

Tree Service in Mooringsport is shaped by Caddo Lake. The town sits on the lake's south shore in western Caddo Parish, about 18 miles northwest of downtown Shreveport. Settlers from Alabama and North Carolina founded it in 1836, and for years it was a small steamboat hub moving cotton across the lake before the Kansas City Southern Railway came through. It is still a small town, 748 residents in 2020, and many of its homes face the water or sit a short walk from it.

A lake unlike any other

Caddo Lake covers about 25,400 acres of lake and bayou on the Texas-Louisiana line and holds one of the largest flooded cypress forests in the United States. It was named a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention in 1993. Most geologists tie its origin to the Great Raft, the enormous log jam on the Red River. All of that makes for beautiful property, and for some specific tree questions.

What lakeside lots ask of a tree company

  • Leaning shoreline trees. Trees along the bank reach for the open light over the water, so many lean out over the lake, docks and boathouses. A lean is not always a problem, but a lean that is getting worse, or soil heaving on the land side, is.
  • Soft ground. Saturated soil near the shore holds roots poorly, and it also limits where heavy equipment can go without rutting the yard. Many lakeside removals are done by climbing and lowering pieces by rope rather than bringing in a large machine.
  • Keeping debris out of the water. We plan drop zones, use rigging to steer wood back toward land and clean up chips and sawdust along the bank.
  • Docks and boathouses. Limbs over a boathouse roof or dock can be cut back without removing the tree, which keeps the shade and the look of the shoreline.

Cypress and other wetland trees

Bald cypress growing in or right at the water's edge are part of what makes Caddo Lake special, and they are well adapted to standing water. Our usual work with them is light: removing dead limbs over docks and walkways. Before any work in the water or on the lake bottom itself, it is worth checking who has jurisdiction, since parts of the lake are managed for conservation.

Yard trees in town

Away from the shoreline, Mooringsport yards hold oaks, pines and other hardwoods like any north Louisiana town, along with the usual problems: limbs over roofs, dead wood after a dry summer and storm breakage. We prune, remove and grind stumps on in-town lots too.

Fall and winter scheduling

The lake is busiest in warm months, and docks are in use. Many lakeside owners prefer tree work in late fall and winter, when leaves are off, the ground is often firmer and the work does not interfere with boating season.

  • Invasive salvinia. The lake is under pressure from giant salvinia, a fast-spreading aquatic fern that can double in size every two to four days, with most of it on the Louisiana side.
  • River-town history. Settlers from Alabama and North Carolina founded Mooringsport in 1836. It served steamboats carrying cotton before the Kansas City Southern Railway arrived, and Lead Belly was born there.

Mooringsport Questions

Can you take down a tree that leans over my boathouse?

Yes. We usually climb the tree and lower it piece by piece with ropes, steering each piece away from the boathouse and the water. The estimate will explain the rigging plan.

Will equipment tear up my soggy lakeside yard?

We try to avoid that. On wet lots we use lighter equipment, ground mats, or hand-carry the wood to firmer ground. Sometimes the best plan is to wait for drier weather.

Do you trim cypress trees along the shoreline?

We can remove dead limbs and clear branches over docks and paths on your property. Work in the lake itself may involve other rules, so check before anything is cut below the waterline.
