A Crossroads Between Water and Woods
Tree Service in Hosston comes with a geography lesson. The village sits in northern Caddo Parish about 1 mile east of Black Bayou Lake and about 3 miles west of the Red River, at the crossing of US Route 71 and Louisiana Highway 2. From here, US 71 runs about 28 miles south to Shreveport and 9 miles north to the Arkansas line at Ida, and Highway 2 runs about 7 miles west to Vivian and 11 miles east to Plain Dealing. The village had 244 residents in 2020.
Hosston grew out of the work of the Hoss family, beginning with merchant Nathan Hoss in the mid-1800s, and the Hale Post Office opened here on May 16, 1890. Noah Tyson Park on Mira Myrtis Road carries the name of one of the early partners in local business.
Timing work around the ground
With a lake on one side and a river on the other, much of the land around Hosston is low and holds water after heavy rain. That matters for tree work in two ways. First, wet soil loosens roots, so trees are more likely to tip in storms after a long rainy spell. Second, soft ground limits where trucks, chippers and stump grinders can go without leaving ruts. When a job can wait, we schedule it for drier weeks. When it cannot, we bring lighter equipment, use ground mats or carry wood out by hand.
Jobs we see around Hosston
- Dead or dying trees close to houses and outbuildings
- Limbs over roofs, carports and the power drop to the house
- Trees blocking long gravel drives or leaning over the road after storms
- Fence rows that have turned into tree lines
- Stumps left from old removals, ground below grade for mowing
- Larger trees on lake-side lots that lean toward open water
A word on lake-side trees
Trees near Black Bayou Lake and its edges tend to grow toward the light over the water and can develop heavy leans. A lean that is old and stable, with a corrected top, is usually fine. A lean that is new or getting worse, especially with cracked soil or exposed roots on the side away from the lean, is a warning sign and deserves a quick look.
Equipment for the job
The right setup depends on the job. Small jobs may only need climbing gear, saws and a chipper. Larger removals may call for a bucket truck, a skid steer or, rarely, a crane. Whatever the job needs, we will explain the plan in the estimate, including how we will protect your yard.

Hosston Questions
My yard is soaked. Should I wait to have a tree removed?
If the tree is not an immediate danger, waiting for drier ground often protects your yard and can make the job easier. If it is leaning toward the house or hanging over a drive, call now.
Do you work on properties around Black Bayou Lake?
Yes. We handle lake-side trees and plan rigging so wood and debris stay out of the water.
Can you clear a tree that fell across the road to my house?
Yes, if it is on your property. If it is on a parish road or touching power lines, call the parish or the utility first.
How do you price jobs this far from town?
Every job gets a written estimate after we see it. Combining several tasks into one visit usually gives you better value.
Can you grind stumps so I can mow over them?
Yes. We grind several inches below grade, rake the grindings back into the hole or haul them off, and the spot can be topped with soil and seeded. Old stumps left from past removals are a common add-on to other jobs.
