Living Under Tall Pines
A lot of the Tree Service in Eastwood we are asked about involves pines. Eastwood is a Census-designated place in Bossier Parish, first counted as a CDP in 1990, with 4,390 residents in 2020 spread over about 6.35 square miles. It is often mistaken for Haughton, its neighbor to the southeast, and it borders Red Chute to the west. At about 246 feet, it sits a little higher than Bossier City, and many of its lots keep a share of the pine and hardwood woods that covered this ground.
That setting is part of the larger Piney Woods region that runs across East Texas, northwest Louisiana and southwest Arkansas, where loblolly and shortleaf pine grow with oaks, hickories and sweetgums. Living in it is a pleasure most of the year. The trade-off is that a 70- or 80-foot pine standing within reach of a house needs regular attention.
Four things that take pines down
Bark beetles. Pines weakened by drought, root damage or lightning attract southern pine beetles and engraver beetles. Look for small, popcorn-like pitch tubes on the bark, reddish boring dust in bark crevices, or a crown that fades from green to yellow to red over a few weeks. Infested pines usually cannot be saved, and prompt removal can help protect the pines next to them.
Lightning. The tallest tree on a lot is the one most likely to be hit. A strike can leave a spiral strip of missing bark down the trunk, and the tree may die months later. Struck pines are also beetle magnets.
Wind on wet soil. After a soaking rain, pines can uproot in gusts that would normally just sway them. A new lean, cracked soil or raised roots on one side are warning signs.
Decay at the base. Conks, soft wood or hollow sounds near the root flare point to rot that can weaken the trunk long before the crown shows it.
How we handle big pines near houses
When there is room, a pine can be felled in one piece into an open yard. When it is close to the house, the shop or the power line, a climber removes it from the top down in sections, lowering each one by rope. In some cases a crane is the safest option. We explain which method fits your lot and why before you agree to anything.
Hardwoods too
Not everything here is pine. Oaks, sweetgums and hickories along drives and in back corners need the usual care: removing dead wood, clearing roofs and raising limbs over driveways. Fall and winter visits let us see the whole structure.

Eastwood Questions
One of my pines has little globs of sap all over the trunk. What does that mean?
Those are often pitch tubes, the tree's attempt to push out bark beetles. If there are many, or the needles are fading, the tree is likely infested. Call soon, because beetles can move to neighboring pines.
Lightning hit a pine in my yard but it still looks green. Should I remove it?
Not always right away, but watch it closely. Many struck pines decline over the following months and attract beetles. We can look at the damage and tell you how likely the tree is to survive.
How much does it cost to take down a tall pine next to the house?
It depends on the height, how close it is to buildings and lines, and how the wood has to come out. We give a written price after seeing the tree, so you are not guessing from a phone estimate.
Is Eastwood part of Haughton?
No. Eastwood is its own Census-designated place, though people often confuse the two. We work in both, and the visit and estimate process is the same either way.
