Getting Rid of the Stump the Storm Left
Stump grinding is what turns a cut-down tree into usable yard again. A grinder chews the stump into chips a few inches below the surface, so you can lay sod, plant a bed or pour a slab over the spot. Around Shreveport we see a lot of them: pine stumps left from storm cleanups, big oak and pecan stumps from older removals, and clusters of small stumps along fence lines where volunteer hackberries and tallow trees were cut. Pulling a stump out whole with an excavator is possible, but it leaves a large hole and tears up the yard. For most residential lots, grinding is the cleaner choice.
How deep and how wide
A standard grind goes about 4 to 6 inches below grade, which is enough for grass or a flower bed. If you want to plant a new tree in the same spot, set a fence post, or build over the area, tell us and we can go deeper and wider. We also look at surface roots. Water oaks and pecans often have thick roots running across the lawn, and those can be ground out a few feet from the stump at the same time.
Pine versus hardwood stumps
Pine stumps are resinous, and a loblolly stump left in the ground can take years to break down. Oak and pecan stumps rot faster but often sprout, sending up shoots around the cut. Sprouts are a sign the roots are still alive, and grinding the stump usually ends them. A stump with active termites or carpenter ants is worth removing sooner, especially near the house.
Before we grind
Grinding cuts into the ground, so buried lines matter. We ask about irrigation lines, invisible dog fences and lighting cables you know about, and Louisiana 811 should be called before digging so buried utilities are marked. Stumps very close to a slab, a sidewalk or a fence may need hand work around the edges.
What happens to the grindings
A stump turns into a surprising pile of chips and soil. You can keep it to fill the hole and settle in, use it as mulch elsewhere, or have us haul it off and backfill with topsoil so the spot is ready for sod. That choice goes on the quote.
What You Can Book
Grinding is priced per stump, with options for roots, depth and cleanup.
Single and multiple stumps
One stump or a whole fence line ground in one visit; each extra stump usually costs less.
Surface root grinding
Roots running across the lawn ground out a few feet from the stump.
Deep grinding
Extra depth when you plan to replant, set posts or build over the spot.
Chip haul-off and backfill
Grindings removed and the hole filled with topsoil, ready for grass.

Grinding alone usually does not include removing the chips or backfilling, and HomeGuide puts cleanup and disposal at about $2 to $4 per inch of diameter. Your written estimate is the price.
How We Do It
1. Measure and look
We measure each stump, check access through gates, and ask about buried lines and sprinklers.
2. Quote the options
Depth, surface roots and cleanup are listed separately so you choose what you need.
3. Grind
The stump and major roots are ground to the agreed depth, with screens up to keep chips contained.
4. Finish the spot
Chips are raked into the hole, spread as mulch or hauled off and replaced with topsoil.

Stump Grinding Questions
How much does stump grinding cost in Shreveport?
HomeGuide's national figures put a first stump at about $120 to $400 and each additional stump at $30 to $60, or $2 to $6 per inch of diameter. Very large oak or pecan stumps can run $300 to $800. We price each stump after measuring it.
Can you get a stump grinder through my backyard gate?
Often, yes. Smaller grinders fit through gates as narrow as about three feet. If the gate is narrower or the path is soft after rain, we will tell you what it would take before scheduling.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
Grinding usually ends sprouting because it removes the root crown. Some species, especially sweetgum and Chinese tallow, can still send up shoots from roots for a while; those can be mowed or cut until the roots die.
Can I plant a new tree where the stump was?
Yes, but plant a little to one side of the old spot if you can, and ask for deeper grinding and backfill with topsoil. Wood chips break down and settle, and fresh grindings are poor soil for a new tree.
Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?
It is a good idea. Louisiana 811 marks buried utility lines for free, and grinding can reach several inches below grade. Private lines such as sprinklers and pet fences are not marked, so tell us where those run.
